WEBCAST – Providing Culturally Competent Care to Latino Patients

In an effort to deliver quality care, it is imperative that the healthcare provider maintain cultural competence in practice. This program will address characteristics, roles and beliefs of the Latino/Hispanic culture that may impact communication with providers and the outcomes of care received. Participants will have the opportunity to address areas of concern and apply new principles to their practice. Course objectives include:
• Describing characteristics of Latinos/Hispanics living in North Carolina.
• Listing three characteristics of Latinos/Hispanics from Mexico, Central and South America.
• Identifying four values specific to Latino/Hispanic culture and beliefs.

WEBCAST – Violence in the Home: Indicators, Effects and Responses

This program will provide research based information about victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, affects on those who live with this issue (especially children), and current research and professional thinking about effective responses. Course objectives include:
• Describing the context for and characteristics of families where domestic violence is more likely to be present.
• Identifying physical and behavioral signs that suggest possible abuse.
• Discussing family dynamics that keep individuals from leaving a very difficult situation.
• Describing current divergent responses to domestic violence, based on opposing theories of the causes.

WEBCAST – Compassion Fatigue: Who is Taking Care of Me?

This program is designed to increase the awareness and understanding of the potential impact of compassion fatigue on health care providers as they face the daily challenges of working in care giving environments. Topics include: the relationship between care giving and compassion fatigue, burnout and measures to manage and recover. Course objectives include:
• Discussing the relationship between care giving and compassion fatigue.
• Identifying physical and behavioral signs that suggest possible abuse.
• Describing strategies for preventing burnout or compassion fatigue.
• Identifying ways to effectively manage and recover from compassion fatigue.
